Boyars are the noblemen of medieval Russia. Owning vast tracts of land, they are the equivalent of western European feudal lords. Like their western counterparts Boyars often fought as mounted warriors when their Prince went to war. At the battle of Kulikovo Field against the Mongols in 1382, nearly 500 Boyars lost their lives.
