The Empire almost always suffered from a serious lack of good and experienced archers. The Komneneans were lucky enough to have at their disposal the sons of some of the Turkish/Turkoman settlers within the Empire's provinces. This gave them the opportunity to revive the "kursores-defensores" type of infantry units, armed with good composite bows, round shields and swords.
